Cyber security support for SMEs: Bringing clarity or confusion?
Cyber security remains a key priority for organisations of all sizes but can represent a particular challenge for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The most recent Cyber Security Breaches Survey indicated a decline in basic cyber hygiene practices amongst smaller organisations, with the consequent risk of greater exposure to breaches. However, SMEs can face difficulties in understanding their cyber security needs and finding actionable guidance. An assessment of over 30 online sources reveals a considerable variation in the coverage, clarity and completeness of the advice being offered, suggesting that SMEs may get an inconsistent and potentially confused impression as a result. The presentation also highlights work towards a new community-based approach to providing SMEs with an additional route for cyber security support.
Key Takeaways:
- The potential decline of cyber hygiene practices in UK SMEs
- The challenges facing SMEs in approaching cyber security
